In 2022, AMS was appointed by Skanska Construction Ltd on behalf of National Highways to carry out detailed archaeological investigations along the A46 in Nottinghamshire.

The A46 Newark Bypass scheme forms an important part of national infrastructure investment.  The scheme will widen the existing single carriageway relief road that bypasses the historic town of Newark-on-Trent.

Over three years, our team delivered a programme of works along a four-mile route, which included geophysical surveys, field walking, metal detection surveys, evaluation trenching, and excavation.

Explore our interactive storymap to see our initial findings and how our work helped uncover and interpret the area’s rich historic landscape.
